Learning a new language isn’t easy. Many of us wish we could speak multiple languages but it often seems like a huge mountain to climb — especially if you only speak one language to begin with.

Duolingo is a service that makes learning a language a simpler mission. They currently have courses for Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Irish, Danish, Swedish, Russian, Swahili, Polish, Chinese, Romanian, Japanese, Greek, Turkish, Vietnamese, Hebrew, Norwegian, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Welsh, Czech and Korean. They even have languages from science fiction including Klingon (Star Trek) and High Valyrian (Game of Thrones). The best part is, it’s all completely free.

The lessons are given in a bite-sized form, almost like a game, which have been proven to be more effective than traditional methods. Apparently just 34 hours of Duolingo use is the equivalent of an 11 week language course at a university. The lessons are also fun to complete, with questions that include a variety of challenges such as speaking, listening, translating and multiple choice.

If you want to bring Duolingo into your classroom, you can take advantage of their teacher dashboard. Here you can track what languages students are learning and how well they’re progressing. It’s a great idea for an after-school club where children can learn a language that you don’t speak yourself! Duolingo has been made to guide users through the language process and there’s no time restraints. Each individual learns at their own pace.

Duolingo can be accessed on the web or downloaded to your iOS or Android device.

P.S. Don’t forget you can also make good use of podcasts to learn a language. Try Coffee Break Spanish, Yes Japan or Talk in French.
