During winter, many trees often lack leaves which makes identifying them pretty difficult.
Luckily, the Woodland Trust has created a brilliant printable guide allowing you to venture out and identify trees just by looking at their branches and fallen twigs.
Each twig in the guide displays buds and you’ll have to look closely to spot the tree it came from. Changes between the twigs can be subtle so compare size, shape and colour to help narrow it down.
Once trees are covered in spring with fresh new leaves, you can try identifying them using Woodland Trust’s leaf guide. Or if wildlife is more your thing, try tracking down some animal prints and see what’s been wandering around your local woodland.
