How and why do bees make honey?

In this episode of It’s Okay to be Smart, they explain the process that a bee goes through in order to produce honey.

Honey is created as a food source that needs to last all year long, especially in winter when few flowers are around. Most hives produce far more honey than is needed, which is why humans can harvest small amounts for our own consumption.
